Upper Mustang Trek

Most mysterious kingdom of Lo; used to be the ancient salt caravan trail between Nepal and Tibet, and beautifully situated in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain range.

 

Mysterious and least identified kingdom of Lo, which is the remote and isolated region of the Nepalese Himalayas. In the ancient period of time, this Mustang was used as the trade trail through which people of Mustang traded Tibetan salt for grain from the lowlands. Many small kingdoms were united with seat in the royal town of Lo Manthang and became a big kingdom, nowadays named as Mustang.  Since this place is near with Tibet majority of people speak Tibetan Language.

 

The northern 2/3 of Mustang District of Dhaulagiri Zone combined by Upper Mustang which is rich in Buddhist culture. The sophistication primarily Buddhist culture of upper Mustang is identical to the area of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. You can also say it is the alternative way to explore the Tibetan culture and landscapes. Upper Mustang was unexplored and restricted till 1922 and after that, some places are opened to visitors. But still, there are some places which are unexplored and full of mystery. During your trek to the upper Mustang, you will feel like you are on another planet in this foreign land. All around you are yellow, orange and brown windswept hills.

 

Upper Mustang was only accessible by foot but now some vehicles are available.

Upper Mustang is famous for its spectacular views and Tiji festival. Most of the tourist visit this place to take part in this festival so that you can see the most beautiful part of the Upper Mustang with natural and cultural beauty.  The main hydrographic feature of the Mustang is the Gandaki River which runs southward towards Nepal Terai, bisecting Mustang. Routes paralleling the river once served as a major trade route between Tibet and India, especially for salt.

Upper Mustang trek is for all types of trekkers

When to trek Upper Mustang
